San Diego Wildlife Education: What size hole can a skunk fit through

The best-known skunk is the striped skunk, native to North America. They can be found throughout North America but are also present in Mexico and parts of Canada. Other species of skunk are found in Canada and South America. Skunks are relatively placid creatures that pose no threat to humans. They can pose an inconvenience to humans because when scared they spray a noxious gas.

How to identify a skunk hole
The general rule of thumb is that if an animal can fit its head into a hole, the whole body will fit. In the case of a skunk, this hole needs to be 4-6 inches in diameter. These holes can usually be found in and around buildings. Make sure that you close up any holes that you see to ensure that critters cannot gain entry to your home. Skunks will happily live in any place that resembles a hollowed-out log. This means under porches, patios, sheds and woodpiles. This enables them to stay in close proximity to their main source of food. Your Trash.

Other signs that you might have a skunk living on your property
Skunks are usually solitary creatures, so the chances of an infestation are minuscule. However, in winter there may be as many as twenty living in one den. If you see the following signs in your yard, you may have a skunk:
· Holes in your lawn. Skunks will dig in search of insects and other sources of food.
· A large heap of sand close to your property. They may have moved the sand when excavating their den.
· Smell. The area might smell faintly of skunk.

How to get rid of skunks
The best way to get rid of a skunk is to wait for it to leave and to close up any entry points to their den. They are known to use the abandoned dens of other animals to live in. However, they sometimes build their own dens in areas close to your home. These are usually under your porch, house or patio. Once they have left the den, make sure that there are no babies present. The last thing that you want is a litter of orphaned skunks. If you do find a litter, you can try relocating the family to a wooded area close to you. You can then close off their point of entry. If the skunk does not leave on its own you can try scaring it off with bright lights. Do not make any sudden movements or loud noises as you might get sprayed. You might also want to contact a professional to make the removal as painless as possible.

Skunk proofing your home
It is easier to prevent a skunk from entering than to get rid of it. Even the smallest opening can let in an unwelcome visitor. It is important to check your property for openings. Especially in May and June when skunks will be searching for a place to have their babies.
